cooperative effect is good or not has an important impact on the army's combat strengthđand victory and defeat of battles.
After the outbreak of the Total Resistance against Japanese Aggressionđthe problems in cooperative engagements between
the Kuomintang infantry and artillery emerged in an endless stream. It was difficult for the two sides to support each otherđ
even the cases were common that artillery wounded and killed infantry and infantry failed to make full use of the effect of
artillery fire. The main reasons for this phenomenon were that the incomplete system of artillery branchesđbackward
communication meansđinadequate understanding for qualities of opposite sideđand insufficient education and training. In
the face of difficultiesđalthough the Kuomintang military made positive improvements in education and trainingđand
achieved certain resultsđthe overall effects were not impressive. To discuss the problem of cooperative engagement of
infantry and artillery is an excellent window to review cooperative engagement and to examine the military quality of the
Kuomintang military during the War.
The Translations of Mao Zedong's On the Protracted War in Wartime Japan and Their Influences
………………………………………………………………… Sun DaofengđGan Baozhu̵ 114̶
During the Total Resistance against Japanese Aggressionđin order to find out the CPC's resistance strategyđthe
Japanese mediađthe military and the government introduced Mao Zedong's On the Protracted War by means of abridged
translationđselected translationđtranslating freelyđedition and translationđand complete translation. The media translated
earlierđmainly abridged translation and selected translationđand both the Japanese people and the authorities paid
considerable attention to it. Along with the advance of the War of Invading Chinađthe assessment of the media to On the
Protracted War changed from deliberately degraded to objectiveđpaying special attention to the conclusion of the three
stages of the protracted war. In the stalemate stageđOn the Protracted War was not strongly received in the military and
political circles. With the emergence of trend of defeatđthe Japanese government increasingly attached great importance to
the forward-looking and prophetic nature of On the Protracted Warđand translated its full text for reference and use of
military and political circles. That is to sayđwhen the war intention was delayedđJapan had traced back to the root of the
strategic mistakes in invading Chinađand had to invest more energies to explore and discuss the CPC's protracted-war
strategy.
The Capture and Release of Han Deqin͇ The Strategy and Tactics of the New Fourth Army

At the end of 1942 and early 1943đthe New Fourth Army on the one hand dealt with the large-scale“mopping up”
operation launched by the Japanese and puppet armiesđand on the other hand carried out cooperation and struggles with
Han Deqin and other Kuomintang forces behind the enemy linesđexploring countermeasures in a complexđchangeable and
dangerous environment. In March 1943 in HuaibeiđPeng Xuefeng's 4th Division destroyed the Han Delqin's force with the
cooperation of branches of the 2nd and 3rd Divisionđcaptured Han Deqin and prevented the attempt of the Kuomintang
forces led by Han Deqin and Wang Zhonglian to occupy the Huaibei Resistance Base after their meeting. Laterđin order to
ease the relations between the Kuomintang and the CPC and improve the situation of Central China behind the enemy
linesđthe New Fourth Army released Han Deqin politely. The capture and release of Han Deqin reflected the New Fourth
Army's strategy of militarily offensive and politically defensiveđechoing the negotiations between the Kuomintang and the
CPC in Chongqing. This incident also reflected the final failure of the Nationalist government to retain military and political
forces behind the enemy lines in Jiangsu. It had a turning point in the military and political confrontations among the
Japaneseđpuppet and the CPC forces in Central Chinađbeing a sign of maturity for the New Fourth Army in military and
politics
