1. Phosgene gas—5-minute injection of gas into a brick-lined room; the
subject was still alive one day aer inhalation of gas; critically ill with
pneumonia.
2. Potassium cyanide—the subject was injected with 15 mg.; subject lost
consciousness approximately 20 minutes later.
3. 20,000 volts—several jolts were not enough to kill the subject; injection
of poison required to kill the subject.
4. 5000 volts—several jolts were not enough; aer several minutes of
continuous current, subject was burned to death.”
Word must have reached the Japanese scienti c community ; the New Japan
Medicine Report published in 1934 stated, “ e Ninth General Japan
Medical Conference is a big event on this small archipelago in the Far East.
Japan’s medicine is now independent from the medical community of the
world. We have already been ousted from the League of Nations [;] it is the
feeling of the people that in the eld of science, others will look up to Japan”.
