The End of the War
The surrender of the puppet emperor of Manchuria, Henr y Puyi on August 16, 1945.
No one in Unit 731 saw the end of the war coming in August of 1945. e
Soviets had formally declared war on Imper ial Japan and had launched an
attack into Northeast China and Korea. Due to the rapid progression of
Soviet Union troops, Unit 731 was unable to continue their operation. On
th
August 9 , General Yamada, the Commander in Chief of the Kwantung
[52]
Army, signed an order to destroy Unit 731. e buildings were dynamited
and all prisoners were cremated and cast into the Songhuajiang River
[53]
outside of Harbin.
