neighbour Wei’s home. They did not follow me to the room but directed me outside the house. I put the paper with password code under the blanket. A while later, one Kempei came and interrogated
                 me.
                   ‘What is your name?’
                   ‘Guijie Long.’
                   ‘How old are you?’
                   ‘26 years old.’
‘How many people in your family?’
                   ‘Four persons.’
‘What is the name of your husband?’
                   ‘Huizhong Zhang.’
                   ‘What does he do?’
‘He works with the railway carriage.’
                   ‘Where are you two from?’
                   ‘From Shenyang three years ago.’
‘Where did the radio come from?’
                   ‘Picked up.’
                   ‘From which location?’
‘From the north of the railway.’
They questioned me while hitting me at the same time. I was holding my child who was scared to cry. Japanese soldiers took away my child and hit me on my eye. They also choked my neck, and
I fainted. When I woke up, I was guarded by two soldiers. They put handcuffs on my hands and sent me to the Mudanjiang Kempetiai. My two children were also sent to the Kempeitai. The oldest was
only two years old and the younger one was just four months. We were sent to a temporary detention room. I held my children and wept in the corner near the window. I sat on the cold concrete floor,
and because of the tiredness, I slept on the floor. At night, a Japanese soldier gave me a rice ball as dinner. I shared a large bite with my older child. He cried hard while he was eating. The younger kid
                 was also crying nonstop.
The next morning, the soldiers took me to the backyard of the Kempeitai. They asked me to stand still. I heard Huizhong Zhang yelling from the second floor where he was being tortured. At
around 10 a.m., the soldiers took me to another room. One Japanese was sitting opposite me and there was a Chinese translator next to him. A bald-head Japanese soldier was recording.
The Japanese asked, ‘Why didn’t you say there is a radio at your home? When did the radio arrive?’ I said, ‘Just few days ago.’ The Japanese asked, ‘Where did the radio come from?’ I said, ‘I
have no idea. I don’t dare ask him. He would hit me whenever I asked. He always hit me.’
The Japanese said, ‘Now you don’t have to be afraid. Just tell whatever you know. What is the use of the radio?’ I replied, ‘I do not know.’
The translator came over and used two pencils to pinch my fingers. I screamed, and my two children were scared into crying again. The Japanese continued to ask, ‘Where is the radio from?’
I replied, ‘I do not know. I did not dare ask him. He told me if I keep asking him about his stuff, he will kill me and my kids. I am so scared of him. I always want to divorce him.’
After a week of suffering, the Japanese soldiers released me.
One evening two months later, the deputy captain of Mudanjiang Kempeitai, Ichiki Hasegawa, and Shiren Liu came to my home. They informed me that Huizhong Zhang and Zhiying Zhu were
sent to Changchun. A few days before mid-autumn festival, Lanzhi Jing and I went to Changchun Kempeitai where one of the Kempei told us that they were sent to Harbin Kempeitai. We went to
Harbin afterward, and we did not hear anything about them. 8
